"Collective vision for Hopkins Public Schools & 2017 Referendum"
Sep 26, 2017
Meeting location: Frankie's Chicago Style Bar & Restaurant - 3556 Winnetka Ave N, New Hope Minnesota 55427 "Collective vision for Hopkins Public Schools & 2017 Referendum" Dr. Rhoda Mhiripiri-Reed has served in public education for over 15 years. Improving the lives of others has been a driving force throughout her life. During her time as a student at Bloomington Kennedy High School, she became intrigued with community service while in the role of a candy striper for the Minnesota Masonic Home for the elderly. While attending Yale University, she became even more involved in the community through tutoring adolescents, volunteering weekly at the local Head Start, and serving meals at the homeless shelter. These experiences helped her realize the impact that quality education can have in young people's lives, and she decided to make education her lifelong ambition. After graduating from Yale with her teaching license, she returned to Minnesota to begin her career as an educator. She taught social studies at Highland Park Junior High in Saint Paul, and later served as an assistant principal at her alma mater Bloomington Kennedy, and then as a high school principal for five years at Champlin Park in the Anoka-Hennepin District. She was soon after admitted into Harvard University's new doctoral program in Education Leadership, which resulted in a doctoral residency with District of Columbia Public Schools, building a principal training program. Finally, right before moving back to her home state, Mhiripiri-Reed served as Associate Superintendent in the Monterey Peninsula Unified District for three years. Mhiripiri-Reed is thrilled to lead Hopkins Public Schools. Her goals include continuing and strengthening the District-wide E-12 program excellence, emboldening an already-strong Hopkins identity, and positioning Hopkins to be the obvious district of choice for Hopkins residents and beyond. Mhiripiri-Reed lives with her husband Frank and their two young children Sterling (8) and Sawyer (5). She is a self-described workaholic, but in her downtime you may find her running on one of the metro trails, connecting with friends or maybe watching some reality TV. |

New Developments in Plastics Recycling
Nov 28, 2017
Meeting location: Frankie's Chicago Style Bar & Restaurant - 3556 Winnetka Ave N, New Hope Minnesota 55427 The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) monitors environmental quality, offers technical and financial assistance, and enforces environmental regulations. The agency finds and cleans up spills or leaks that can affect our health and environment. Staff develop statewide policy, and support environmental education. In 1967, a growing awareness of the environment's fragile nature led the Minnesota Legislature to create a new state agency, one with a unique challenge and a demanding responsibility: to protect the air, waters, and land of our great state. The Minnesota Legislature gave authority to the MPCA to begin controlling pollution problems in the state three years before the first Earth Day and the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As the Recycling Market Development Coordinator with Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Wayne consults with companies in the areas of finance, new product development, business plan development, sales, and marketing. Wayne has done extensive work in economic analysis linking the environment and economy. Wayne has thirty+ years experience in financial analysis, banking, new business start-ups, sales, marketing, new product development, customer service, consulting, business development, EPR, and management. He has worked in the private and public sector. Wayne earned his B.S. in Business Administration at St. John’s University-Collegeville, MN. Rochester STEM Academy Somali Poets
Dec 19, 2017
The mission of Rochester STEM Academy (RSA) is to provide a highly supportive learning environment for minority, immigrant, and other students currently underserved in traditional area high schools and greatly underrepresented in Rochester’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) industries through a challenging program that emphasizes creativity, accountability, ongoing assessments, college-preparation, and high academic achievement. Located in a city known for its medical and technology industries, RSA is among the very first STEM high schools in Minnesota. RSA creates multiple community partnerships to expose its students to STEM through internships, apprenticeships, mentorship, field trips, specialized programming, enrichment, and by continually bringing specialists working in STEM fields into its classrooms. This will ensure that minority children, including East African, Hmong, and Hispanic immigrants, will acquire the skills, knowledge-base, educational preparation, and motivation required to succeed in an increasingly technological world. At the same time, RSA’s goal of continually immersing its students within a college-focused culture will support their embarking in post-secondary studies. In these ways, RSA’s programming will replicate the outstanding success of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and other STEM-focused secondary schools that have already garnered national attention. |

Wildlife Rehabilitation Center
Jan 02, 2018
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota (WRC) provides quality medical care and rehabilitation for all injured, sick, and orphaned wild animals, and shares its knowledge with the people who care about them. WRC was founded at the University of Minnesota in 1979 as a student club of the Veterinary College. From those humble beginnings of just a few dozen animals a year, the WRC has grown into one of the nation's busiest wildlife hospitals, admitting more than 14,000 patients annually. A year-round staff of just 14 people, nine of which are medical professionals, keeps WRC's budget focused on providing care to its patients. During the summer, WRC adds five to six seasonal staff to run its three nurseries (Avian, Mammal, and Waterfowl.) |

Inspirational speaker on Overcoming Adversity
Jan 09, 2018
Duke Pieper was an elite hockey player at a young age. As a freshman at Hill-Murray High School, he made the varsity of the then-defending state champion Pioneers. Before his first game, he suffered from a brain lesion that altered his life. Given a 5 percent chance to live, Pieper overcame multiple surgeries, paralysis, and nerve damage. In place of his dreams of hockey stardom, Pieper found illness, surgery, infection, paralysis, months of hospitalization, and lingering disability. And yet, by his own admission, Pieper has emerged a better, bigger person. |

Girls United MN and The Link - Sexual Exploitation in MN
Jan 16, 2018
With the Super Bowl in Minnesota just a few weeks away, there has been heightened attention on sexual exploitation/human trafficking. Campaigns to battle sex trafficking have launched, partly in hopes of leveraging the extra attention that will accompany an estimated 1 million visitors to the state for Super Bowl 52. One campaign, called “I Am Priceless,” is from Minneapolis-based The Link, which provides services and housing for sexually exploited youths. Billboards, bus shelters, radio ads, and a downtown Minneapolis mural will target 10- to 14-year-old girls and boys with the message: “My body is not for sale.” Girls United MN, started at Hopkins High School, has joined in the effort to educate about and prevent sexual exploitation. |

A new era at Perpich Center for Arts Education
Jan 30, 2018
Curt Tryggestad, former superintendent of Eden Prairie Schools, took over in August as executive director of the Perpich Center for Arts Education. Tryggestad ran the Eden Prairie system from 2012-2017. Before that, he was superintendent of Little Falls Community Schools in central Minnesota and Esko Public Schools in northeastern Minnesota. He began his career as an instrumental music teacher. The Minnesota Association of School Administrators named him the 2017 Minnesota Superintendent of the Year. The Perpich Center, which runs arts outreach programs as well as an arts high school in Golden Valley, narrowly survived a legislative inquiry in 2017. The center had been in turmoil since before former director Sue Mackert retired in January. Shortly after Mackert's retirement, the state legislative auditor released a critical report on the center, noting diminished outreach to school districts and low enrollment and test scores at the center's Golden Valley high school. With a new executive director, Perpich leaders hope the agency will be rejuvenated. “The board members have been working nonstop, and the Legislature and the governor’s office are supporting our work,” Perpich Board Chairman Benjamin Vander Kooi said in a statement. “Next is working with the new [executive director] to create a strategic plan that will carry us forward to even greater success.” |
